Barcelona is Spain’s second biggest city and has a population of about 1.6 million people with its centre; “greater Barcelona” has about 4.5million people. Although Barcelona is regarded as a Catalan city in truth it’s population is pretty diverse, coming from many different parts of Spain. This means both Spanish and Catalan can be heard being spoken in its bustling streets.

Barcelona also has a number of foreign immigrants the largest numbers coming from South America, but more and more Northern European people are moving to Barcelona to enjoy its magical qualities, buying up vast amounts of Barcelona property for sale. In terms of architecture Barcelona is continuing its ground breaking tradition in this new modernist era, typifying this is the imaginary shaped (cucumber) Torre Agbar which in sunlight can be seen reflecting hundreds of different colours.

5 Places to Visit in Barcelona

  1. La Sagrada Familia Church – Probably Gaudi finest building, is the most visited landmark in Spain and ironically remains unfinished
  2. La Boqueria – 19th Century Food Market
  3. Barcelona FC – if sport is your thing, visit Barcelona’s Camp Nou Stadium
  4. Park Guell – Like stepping into a fairy tale Park Guell is an area littered with many of Gaudi’s architectural masterpieces
  5. La Rambla - The main pedestrian precinct is perhaps Barcelona’s busiest and liveliest street full of bars, restaurants and People!

 
Eating out in Barcelona is a heavenly experience, especially if you like seafood, but be warned if you turn up at your restaurant before 9pm expect it to be rather empty, in Barcelona the night doesn’t get going until at least 11pm  so traditionally people locals eat later.
 
If you can hold your appetite long enough you will find that Barcelona has a range of top quality restaurants to pick from, at very reasonable prices. Take Elche (Carrer de Vila 71) for instance, an old styled family restaurant severing scrumptious paella and various other rice dishes mixed with fresh seafood. Casa Calvet (Carrer de Casp) set in an apartment block designed by Gaudi, is a far grander and more expensive restaurant, regularly filled with the rich and famous, the food is a Mediterranean delight.
 
If all you want to do is fill up with good food in a laid back atmosphere, then try Agut (Carrer d En Gignas) meat eaters will love the large steak portions and spicy fish stew.

You can’t go to spain without having tapas at least once, there are so many Tapas restaurants’ to list in the article but one of the best is Inopia on Carrer de Tamarit.

Accommodation in Barcelona is plentiful with several types of abode to choose from including. Luxurious hotels on La Rambla, Self catering apartment’s common throughout Barcelonas tourist areas.

If you are thinking more long term and want to buy a property in Barcelona then you will need a decent budget, as you would expect buying property in Barcelona is not cheap. Although not as expensive as London, property prices in Barcelona remain, at least on a par with Madrid.
 
In terms of where best buy property for sale in Barcelona, this very much depends on your budget and reason for buying. If you are looking for a place with competitive property prices, up and coming, with character then L'Hospitalet de Llobregat scores quite highly on all three counts.  Diagonal Mar is also an area with great property investment potential if you don't mind the fact that it is full of new builds which for some will detract from its character.
 
The reality is real estate sales in Barcelona are always going to be relatively expensive compared to the rest of Europe. There are several reasons for this, for one property is easy to resell or let in Barcelona as you will always get new people visiting Barcelona whether on holiday or look for more permanent residence. Secondly why the rest of Spain has been aflickted by a slow down in property prices (negative equity in some areas) the Barcelona property for sale market has stayed relatively healthy.
